Walks and Talks

We are always finding out more about the interesting people buried in the cemetery. We share these stories with you through guided walks, leaflets and talks. The cemetery helps us to learn not just about the past but the present too.

Self-Guided Walks – Leaflets

The Friends have produced the following leaflets, each one forming the basis of a walk around part of Hyde Park Cemetery, visiting the graves of notable people or, in the case of the Heritage Circuit, other points of interest, too.  Click on the links below to open PDF versions of the leaflets.

Guide No.1 – Notable Doncastrians

Guide No.2 – More Notable Doncastrians

Themed Walks

Members of the Friends of Hyde Park Cemetery lead several guided walks each year. Each walk has a different theme, and explores a variety of stories from throughout the history of the cemetery. Most of these walks take place either on Saturday evenings or Sunday afternoons in the summer months. For details of forthcoming walks please refer to the Events page.

Talks

The committee of the Friends of Hyde Park Cemetery can visit your site or organisation to give a talk about the cemetery.  A small fee is payable, with the proceeds going to the Friends to help them in continuing their work. We currently offer two talks.

Hyde Park Cemetery - A Biography of Doncaster

Journey through the history of the cemetery. From its beginnings in the 1850s through expansion to become one of the largest municipal cemeteries in the country.  We will look at the fascinating stories of some of the famous individuals that are buried here, and also look at what the Friends of Hyde Park group do to help conserve the site for the future.

20th Century Mayors

Discover how Doncaster’s mayors transformed the town in the 20th Century and left their mark.  Learn about the national and international events that happened during each mayor’s time in office, how Doncaster changed through their time in office, and uncover why Hyde Park Cemetery is such an important part in Doncaster’s rich history.

To enquire about a talk please email us and a member of our committee will get back to you as soon as possible.

‘Standing Stones – Recumbent Ancestors’ – A book on Hyde Park Cemetery

This book, by Margaret Pidcock Burns, was published in 2003, prior to the formation of the Friends of Hyde Park Cemetery.  As the book is now out of print, Margaret has made it available online and it can be accessed by clicking here.  Our readers are reminded that the Friends of Hyde Park Cemetery are not responsible for the content of external websites.
